Urban Shell

Travelling to work everyday can be very tedious, the same road, the same surroundings and the same time of the day. I pass this service station everyday and loved the silver ladder poking up through the blue sky, accompanied by the yellow and red colours of the building I had the primaries all in one frame!

I made a mental note to return with camera gear in tow, to capture this scene in the right conditions.

My thought process and inspiration behind how I wanted to portray the image was the artworks by Jeffery smart and photographer Ben Thomas, and the genre of hyperrealism.

The perfect conditions presented themselves on the first day of the new year of 2021. A public holiday, so minimal traffic and perfect crystal clear blue skies, with little wind! 10am in the morning, so that the sun was not too high, as i wanted to see shadows

I set up the tripod on the other side of the road and extended its reach as far as I could go to on capture the very top of the building.

I used a circular polariser to accentuate the colours, and focused on the ladder, using a vertical orientation to have at least half the frame filled with the blue sky. In post processing I played around with the HSL sliders to achieve the colour blue I wanted.

Very happy with how the image turned out - and will never forget how we can make art from the mundane, simple things we take for granted everyday!
